What’s SEO and Why Do I Need it?
SEO, or search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your website code and content to make your the message of what your website is about clear to users and search engines.
I would assume your purpose of creating a website is to have users come visit it and then do something. (ie buy something, contact you to learn more…) The “build it and they will come” mentality does not work with a website. In order to get users to find your website, you have to optimize your website. There is so much competition on the internet – literally billions of websites and web pages that want to show up in front of your site in the search engines.
By optimizing your websites, search engines like Google can better understand what your website is about. This in turn, makes your website rank higher in the search engine result pages (SERPS) when a user searches for a keyword phrase. The higher you rank in the search engine results, the more likely users will find you and click through to your website. Think about it, how often when you are doing a search do you look beyond the first page? I be most of the time you click on a link in the top 3 results returned.
How to get started with SEO?
Researching and defining keywords that you want your site to rank for and then writing content on your site that targets these terms is a first step to optimizing your website.
Other things you can do to optimize your website are: structuring your code properly, making your code more efficient to load fast, make your website mobile friendly, secure and then building links from other sites to yours.
You can not “SEO your site” one time and forget it. Website maintenance on all levels needs to be addressed ongoing to keep your site useful to your visitors and maintaining your search engine rank. This about your car maintenance. You don’t change your oil once or every couple years and expect it to run efficiently. Its an ongoing effort to maintain.
By continually optimizing your website, over time you site will rank higher in the search engine results pages for the keywords a user enters. Thing will in turn bring you more organic traffic that will bring your new customers.
